jo rance, b.1996, is an emerging contemporary british landscape painter residing in cambridgeshire, england. with a background in woven textile design, jo moved in to a primary painting practice in 2020 after graduating from loughborough university in 2019. her previous award winning creative work in fabric construction and colour remains visually clear in her vibrant colour palettes and decorative painting style. in may 2025, jo was named as one of the king’s foundation ‘35 under 35’, a network of individuals who represent the change that the king’s foundation wants to see in the world, across areas such as nature and sustainability and traditional arts and crafts.
taking note of her surrounding countryside, flora and fauna through location drawing, jo primarily works with acrylic on canvas in her studio. continuously informed by the british landscape throughout the seasons, there’s an organic pull for jo to document the natural world through her work. plein air painting and working in her sketchbook amidst the elements is a key part of her practice, it’s almost meditative.
interrupted palettes characterise her paintings, pastel tones peppered with acidic accents are frequently noted in her collections. jo’s paintings intend to provoke the sense of natural wonder and intrinsic joy everyone should have the opportunity to feel when outdoors.
